    Swell Heights
In the Merewether Beach swell forecast graph, swell heights refer to the average of the highest one-third of swell waves (for height descriptions please see the key at the bottom right of the graph). Not every wave will be the same height, some will be higher and some will be lower. To give an indication, roughly 1 in 10 waves will be higher than the level indicated, 1 in 100 will be more than 50% higher, and 1 in 1000 will be roughly twice as high. The same rough ratio applies for waves that are lower than the level indicated. Please see the key associated with the graph beneath this one for detailed descriptions on swell heights.
    Wave Heights at the Beach
The swell data for Merewether Beach refers to offshore ocean swells, not the size of waves breaking at the beach. We are currently working on delivering a forecast for wave height specifically for Merewether Beach. In the meantime, the surf report for swell and period in the graph below can be used to determine Merewether Beach wave height. See the help button associated with that graph to find out how.
    The Data
WillyWeather sources its Merewether Beach surf forecast information from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The NOAA is the US Government agency that forecasts global weather, similar to the Bureau of Meteorology but many times larger. Merewether Beach surf reports are updated every 6 hours. To see when the last swell forecast was issued and when the next swell forecast will be issued, please see the text beneath the graph.
Note: For information on swell period please see the line graph below and refer to the help button associated with that graph.

Merewether Beach Surf Report - Offshore Swell Period, Height and Direction:

The Merewether Beach surf report shows swell height and direction in more detail, and introduces swell period. The line with the arrows shows swell height and direction, while the dotted line shows swell period in seconds. Move your mouse over the graph to find exact values.
    What is Swell Period?
Swell period tells us the approximate distance between swell waves. It is defined as the amount of time it takes for two consecutive wave crests to pass a stationary point.
How can Swell Period be used?
Swell period can be used to help to determine onshore wave heights. A longer period results in a more powerful wave, forming a higher face than swell of a similar height but with a shorter period. The exact height and quality of the waves at Merewether Beach will also depend on the contour of the seabed, wind speed and direction.
Note: Please see the help button associated with the graph at the top of the page for instructions on how to use our graphs, as well as information on how to interpret the swell data, and to find out where we source the data for our surf reports.
